Obituary: MACKANICK – Joseph A. “Schwabi,” 88, Nanty Glo, was called home peacefully by our Lord Tuesday, March 22, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. Born Jan. 8, 1923, in Boswell, to John and Mary Mackanick. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Andy, John and George; sisters, Ann, Helen and Marie; grandsons, Shane and Mickey Kozlovac; and loving daughter-in-law, Connie. Survived by loving wife, Mary; children, Marlene (Mick Kozlovac), Nanty Glo; Andy and Bernice, Johnstown; James and Brenda, Pittsburgh; Timothy and Deb, Hershey; Joe Jr., Nanty Glo; Brigitte (Bill Emerson), Johnstown; and Theodore and Barb, Nanty Glo; and loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; also sister, Betty. Member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Nanty Glo. He retired from the coal mine. Joe also bartended at the bar, JR, where he got his nickname, “Schwabi.” He was a first sergeant commander in the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and the Korean War. Joe was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed Monday and Tuesday night wrestling. He loved spending time with the love of his life, Mary. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bowser-Ondriezek Funeral Home, Nanty Glo. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Nanty Glo, the Rev. Robert K. Yetsko, TOR, celebrant. Interment, Holy Name Cemetery, Ebensburg. Veterans service will be conducted by local veterans organizations. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church.
